Fingerprints of God

fingerprint1.jpg I’ve been feeling rather nostalgic lately as a new season in the life of our family begins. My son is graduating from college and my daughter is graduating from high school. I can’t help but be taken back to the moments of their births and how it seems like just yesterday I was lifting them over my head while they screeched and laughed. And how I tried to soak up every second of their lives. I have to admit…I’m not ready for this change of seasons. I hate to think what I’m going to be like when I give my daughter’s hand in marriage! (20 or 30 years from now… 😉 )

OK…composure regained…

I could not be more proud of my children. God has so richly blessed me by choosing me to be their earthly father. They each have their own talents, gifts and personalities. Each imprinted with their own fingerprints of God. I heard Steven Curtis Chapman’s song “Fingerprints of God” and it led me to write this post. Below is an excerpt from the lyrics. I pray that we all recognize God’s fingerprints; not just on our children, but on everyone we meet.

Never has there been and never again
Will there be another you
Fashioned by God’s hand
And perfectly planned
To be just who you are
And what He’s been creating
Since the first beat of your heart
Is a living, breathing, priceless work of art

Oh I can see the fingerprints of God
When I look at you,
Yes I can see the fingerprints of God
And I know its true,
You’re a Masterpiece that all creation quietly applauds
And you’re covered with the fingerprints of God

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,
your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
were written in your book
before one of them came to be.

–Psalm 139

Blessings,
David.

You’re such a loving father. Your kids must adore you. I can’t believe how fast they grow up. I was reading a devotion just last night that focus on this topic. It’s a great reminder of God’s innate love for us.

Thanks, Blessed1. I do love my kids with all of my heart. It’s funny…when we were expecting my daughter, I wondered if I could love a second child as much as the first one. Would there be enough to go around!? And then I saw her face and God just filled me up with more love than I could’ve imagined. Yet, somehow, as great as that feeling is, it must pale in comparison to the love He has for us; His kids.

A lovely post David… My children are now in their 20’s and I often become all gooey and think back to the memories of their child hood days and wish I could go back to them so I could do just as you remembered hold them and listen to their little delightful squeals….It is hard for parents to want to let them go, sometimes we have to stop and remember they are adults…I feel a huge amount of pride at what my children have and still are accomplishing in thier lives.. ( waiting for grandchildren though)

I love Psalm 139 I wrote a poem about it waaaaay back. Thankyou for stopping by and leaving encouraging words for me..

    Mnay Blessings to you.

Great post! When I first became a Christian, I was so full of shame and had no self esteem and I practially memorized Psalm 139. It is near to my heart. How exciting to know that my Abba Daddy formed me!
Bless you and I look forward to reading more of your blog!

Carol – I know what you mean. It’s easy for me to get “gooey” when it comes to my kids. I love your poetry and would like to read your poem re. Psalm 139 if you have it handy.

Rachel – Welcome! Thank you for your kind words. I look forward to reading more of your blog as well. Maybe I’ll bring some coffee and chocolate!

Martin – Welcome to you, too! I will be sure to stop by your place as well.

    Blessings,
    David.

This is a wonderful post, David. Thank you for sharing. I pray for the Lord’s blessings upon you as you transition into this new chapter of your life. It is such an important reminder to me “that we recognize God’s fingerprints…in everyone we meet”. I have to remember that all of mankind is made in the image of God Himself and that everyone, regardless of their circumstance, believer or unbeliever, deserves dignity and respect.
May the Lord’s grace be with you today,
    Scotti

Sometimes I think that I can’t wait until they are all out of the house and on their own. And then, the littlest one touches the back of my knee (that’s how high he can reach) and I want to hang onto that feeling forever.

Sappy…..yes, but true. May God’s blessings travel with all of them as they wander out!

David and Steven Curtis Chapman in one post you can’t go wrong! Probably my favorite psalm. It goes to fast. WAY too fast. Each one so specifically designed and different, but togehter they make our family whole. Awesome.

That was a great thought. My mode is in reverse, I have a 6 year old and a 2 year old, both girls, and often times I think about what it’s gonna be like when they go off to college, get married, start to build their own lives, and how I’m gonna miss the times that I’m having with them right now. Wow. I pray that they always stay close to God and that they live out their dreams as God has encoded in their fingerprints. Thanks for that thought.
