Grits and Grace? What the heck do grits and grace have in common?
Well, the answer comes from a story I heard at a weekend retreat many years ago. It goes something like this.
A young man from New York was attending a seminary in the South. One morning before class, he and a friend met for breakfast at the local Waffle House. They placed their orders and chatted while they enjoyed their coffee. When the server brought their orders, the seminarian was surprised to find a side of grits on his plate. “Excuse me, I didn’t ask for grits,” he said. “Oh, honey you don’t have to ask for grits. They just come!”, replied the server.
That’s how it is with God’s grace. You don’t have to ask, it just comes.
What is “grace”? Grace is God’s unmerited favor. Grace is a gift from God. We do not deserve it and there is nothing we have done or could ever do to earn it. All we need to do is accept it.
So, join me on the journey of living out God’s gift of grace.
