I’m on the vestry at my church and one of the hard questions we are asking ourselves is “Are we (as a church) good at outreach?” The best answer I have is, “We’re not good enough.” I include myself in that statement. I am not doing a good job at outreach. Little of what I spend my daily time, energy, and resources on have little to nothing to do with showing people that Jesus is the way to life eternal in Heaven. Of course, I can come up with all kinds of reasons and excuses why I don’t. But, Jesus didn’t say, “Do it if you have time or when you feel like it.” He just said, “Do it.”
Go to the people of all nations and make them my disciples. Baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to do everything I have told you. I will be with you always, even until the end of the world. –Matthew 28:19-20
I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me –John 14:6
If we are to be the Body of Christ, we must heed His command to reach out to those who Jesus would have us reach. We must spend our time working to offer the Love of Christ and to tell them how the creator of heaven and earth loves them enough to die so that they can live.
Quoting a church member, “How are the sheep supposed to eat when the shepherds are inside eating all of the food?”
Feed my sheep. — John 21:16
We are to be His reaching arms, His healing hands, His teaching voice and His feet that go out to show his love and the fact that He is the way.
“If We Are the Body” by Casting Crowns, always comes to mind when I think about outreach and being accountable as a Christian.
If We Are the Body

It’s crowded in worship today
As she slips in trying to fade into the faces
The girls teasing laughter is
carrying farther than they know
Farther than they know
But if we are the body
Why aren’t His arms reaching?
Why aren’t His hands healing?
Why aren’t His words teaching?
And if we are the body
Why aren’t His feet going?
Why is His love not showing them there is a way?
There is a way
A traveler is far away from home
He sheds his coat and quietly sinks into the back row
The weight of their judgmental glances
Tells him that his chances are better out on the road
Jesus paid much too high a price
For us to pick and choose who should come
And we are the body of Christ
Jesus is the way
